Software Testers: Grumpy Old Dogs?

grumpy testers

We’ve all heard it said: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But that is a complete load of old cobblers, both literally and as a metaphor. It’s spouted by people stuck in their ways, who can’t even be bothered to try and are probably more afraid of failure than anything else.

You absolutely and categorically can teach an old dog new tricks. Jess, my beloved dog, was always learning new things throughout her long life, she loved it.

More importantly, Deborah and Victor, or Mum and Dad as I knew them, categorically disproved this metaphor, mastering the digital realm in their 70s. They hadn’t even seen a home computer until after they’d retired. They excelled at it, using technology to run their home and stay in touch with loved ones. They were still using computers well into their 80’s.

So yeah, we all love a metaphor, but don’t let this pithy little idiom cloud your judgement.

Why Do Some Testers Stagnate?

Why do many software testers cling to outdated methods and naff tools?

How often have you tried to show someone a better, easier, more efficient way to do things? Only for them to tell you, they prefer to stick with what they know works. If my Mum had done that, she would have kept sending airmail letters to her sister in Canada.

There has been so much innovation in testing approaches, methodologies and tools. It’s frustrating to see people sticking with Excel and Word instead of using proper tools or using 100% manual testing when automation would allow them to do so much more.

Have we simply accepted the mediocrity of our current situation? Perhaps we’ve just become accustomed to inadequate time, outdated or no tools, lack of proper training, and stakeholders’ persistent disregard for our profession.

Well, enough is enough! I’m calling all software testers to stop making excuses – If my dog and my folks can adapt and learn, so can you.

Why Now Is The Time to Challenge the Norm

It’s time to rediscover our curiosity, break free from the fear of the unknown, and learn new tricks.

We must think differently. For sanity and survival, for the progress of our profession, and for the next generation of testers.

We must keep challenging the status quo and paving the way for innovations and improvements in our field.

You Can Become the Catalyst for Change

Don’t be that tester! You know the one, the curmudgeonly old caricature that grinds away, plodding inexorably to another live incident. Don’t succumb to frustrations and give in to perceived limitations; be the change you wish to see.

Champion new approaches, seek better tools, and advocate for the respect and resources you and all software testers deserve.

It’s time we all kicked into gear and rejuvenated the realm of software testing. We must cast away the outdated methodologies and embrace the future with an open mind.

Forget what you’ve been told about old dogs. Remember Jess and my parent – It’s never too late to learn, adapt, and grow.

So why wait? Let’s redefine software testing, one tester at a time.

Test Automation Hype

Are Test Automation Claims Just Marketing Hype?

Read the marketing collateral from test automation vendors and you’ll encounter bold promises around costs, coverage, and defect reduction. However, for many who have been through multiple automation initiatives, the reality frequently fails to live up to the pitch.

Adding More Testers Makes Quality Worse

When Adding More Testers Makes Quality Worse!

You’re deep into a project, go-live is rapidly approaching, but there is a mountain of testing to get through. Then, a key stakeholder chimes in, “Let’s just pull more people into testing.” It sounds logical: bigger effort, higher quality. But doubling down on resources can easily lead to chaos, confusion, and worse software quality.

Is Open Source Trustworthy

Do You Trust Open-Source Tools for Enterprise Testing?

Open-source testing tools like JMeter and Selenium have obvious appeal—no licensing fees, endless customisation, and a community to lean on. But, if you’re using open-source for mission-critical testing, you need to ask—is it really worth the risk?

Should testers be allowed to block releases?

Should Testers Be Allowed to Block Releases?

Your testers find a critical bug the night before a major release. Should they have the power to stop the launch?

Testers provide essential insights into software quality and risk. Their analysis is critical for decision-makers, so would it make sense to give them the power to veto releases?

Bug seeding

Bebugging: Would You Plant Defects to Test Testers?

Would you intentionally plant defects to test your test team? Bebugging, as it’s known, is a technique where software flaws are purposely introduced to gauge testing effectiveness. Are there times and places where bebugging is a valid way to help improve processes, tighten up testing, or root out a potential weak link?

Unethical Test Tool Marketing

Exposed: Are You Being Conned By Test Tool Marketing?

We have all witnessed an alarming rise in deceptive marketing practices that undermine customer decision-making and market integrity, with tool vendors increasingly comparing their tools to industry leaders using deliberately misleading information.

Flaky Automated Tests

Are Flaky Automated Tests Better Than None at All?

Is flaky automation better than no automation at all? Does it help accelerate projects and reduce timelines, or does it end up causing more problems than it solves? And are the questions moot when, with modern AI-powered tools, there’s no excuse for flaky tests?

Software Testing Concepts

Software QA Mythbusting: 5 Misunderstood Testing Concepts

We’ve all been there—sitting in a meeting, nodding along, confident that everyone shares the same understanding, only to discover later that our ideas were built on shaky ground, based on false assumptions and an incomplete grasp of a complex situation. In the world of software development, nowhere is this more common, or more consequential, than with software testing.

LoadRunner v JMeter

LoadRunner: Cheaper & Easier Than JMeter?

Four years ago, I wrote about how LoadRunner Cloud was debunking the myth that open-source is cheaper. At the time, LoadRunner Cloud’s pay-as-you-go pricing, bundled infrastructure, and rapid setup were already making it a compelling alternative to JMeter and similar tools.
