How to Choose The Right Test Management Tool

How to Choose A Test Management Tool

The life of a test manager is never easy. They must manage complex test assets and environments, coordinate distributed teams and ensure comprehensive test coverage. Additionally, the need to report upwards and sideways and collaborate with various other project teams makes things even more challenging.

It is no wonder, then, that test management tools are indispensable for ensuring efficient, effective, and auditable testing processes.

Which Test Management Tool Should You Choose?

These tools provide a centralised repository for organising test assets, tracking progress, and generating detailed reports. They enable test managers to streamline workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and gain valuable insights into testing metrics.

Moreover, test management solutions facilitate collaboration among team members, enhance traceability between requirements and test cases, and support compliance with industry regulations.

By leveraging the right test management tool, organisations can significantly improve their testing efficiency, reduce errors, and ultimately deliver higher-quality software products.

However, the wrong test tool—some companies still try to use Excel—can lead to constant headaches and an inordinate amount of effort.

Choosing Between The OpenText Test Management Tools

When choosing an enterprise-level test management solution, it’s essential to use a proven and trusted solution.

Today, I will look at two of the leading Test Management tools:

The OpenText Tools have significant provenance and heritage, tracing their roots to Mercury TestDirector.

Both offer robust test and application management features and are leaders in their respective areas. However, they cater to different methodologies and organisational needs.

Understanding where each tool fits and how it addresses the unique challenges test managers face is crucial and contributes to more effective quality assurance processes.

Today, I will explore the key differences between these tools and how to choose between them.

OpenText Test Management Tools Name Changes

Note: The OpenText Tools have gone through a rebrand, and these tool names have been changing as follows:

  • ValueEdge Quality > OpenText Software Delivery Management
  • ALM Quality Center (on-prem) > OpenText Application Quality Management
  • ALM Quality Center (SaaS) > OpenText Core Application Quality Management

However, in this insight, I will refer to them as QC and VeQ.

See The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to OpenText Test Tools for more on the OpenText name changes.

ALM Quality Center: The Stalwart of Traditional Development

QC has long been the go-to solution for organisations following traditional/waterfall development methodologies. It offers comprehensive test management capabilities and is well-suited for highly regulated industries.

QC’s strengths lie in:

  • Comprehensive Test Management: QC excels at managing automated and manual tests, test plans, and defects in a structured manner.
  • Requirements Management: It offers robust features for defining, tracking, and linking requirements to test cases.
  • Regulatory Compliance: QC is well-suited for highly regulated industries with features like risk-based quality management and e-signature solutions.
  • Enterprise Scalability: QC is designed to handle large-scale projects with high customisability and security features.

Consider QC when:

  • Your organisation primarily follows waterfall or wagile/hybrid methodologies.
  • You require extensive support for manual testing processes.
  • Regulatory compliance and audit trails are critical to your industry.
  • You need a mature, battle-tested solution with many integrations.

ValueEdge Quality: Embracing Agile and DevOps

On the other hand, VeQ is built for the modern age of Agile and DevOps practices. It integrates seamlessly with popular CI/CD tools and focuses on automated testing.

VeQ’s strengths lie in:

  • CI/CD Integration: VeQ seamlessly integrates with popular CI/CD tools, providing visibility into the entire pipeline.
  • Automated Testing Focus: While it supports manual testing, VeQ excels at managing and analysing automated tests from various frameworks.
  • Agile Project Management: VeQ’s built-in support for Agile methodologies like Scrum and Kanban makes It ideal for teams that embrace these practices.
  • Analytics and Insights: VeQ offers advanced reporting and analytics capabilities, helping teams make data-driven decisions.

Consider VeQ when:

  • Your teams are embracing Agile, DevOps, Hybrid and Waterfall practices.
  • Automated testing is a significant part of your quality assurance strategy.
  • You need deep integration with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools.
  • Real-time analytics and insights are crucial for your decision-making process.

The Best of Both Worlds: Integration

It’s worth noting that many organisations are in a transitional phase, with some projects following traditional methods while others adopting Agile practices.

The good news is that QC and VeQ can integrate, allowing for a smooth transition or coexistence of different methodologies.

How to Choose The Right Test Management Tool

ALM Quality Center and ValueEdge Quality are powerful test management tools, each with its own strengths. The choice between them ultimately depends on your organisation’s development methodology, testing practices, and long-term goals.

ALM Quality Center remains a solid choice for organisations that are deeply invested in traditional methodologies or operating in highly regulated environments.

However, ValueEdge Quality offers a more tailored solution for those embracing Agile and DevOps and needing to integrate testing into CI/CD Pipelines.

Remember, the ability to integrate these tools means you don’t have to make an all-or-nothing decision. Many organisations successfully use both platforms, leveraging the strengths of each where they’re most beneficial.

Next Steps

Review your current processes, consider your future goals, and consider your team preferences to determine which tool best meets your needs.

As you evaluate your options, consider your current needs, future direction, and the potential for a hybrid approach that combines the best of both worlds.

Contact Calleo to discuss the options and book a demo or a trial of both tools to experience their capabilities firsthand.

AI for Test Data

How to Implement AI for Test Data: 10 Considerations

Test data has always been one of the slowest, least glamorous parts of software testing. It is rarely strategic work, but it holds everything up. No matter how good your test plan is, weak data can make the whole exercise unreliable.

Choosing Performance

How to Choose a Performance Testing Tool

If you’re looking for a new performance tool or new to performance testing, it can be a tough subject to get your head around. I’ve been involved in the industry for 3 decades, and during that time, it has evolved massively. Increasingly, I talk to people at companies who’ve never

5 Ways DevWeb Is Better Than JMeter

JMeter often becomes the default because it looks free. There is no license fee, and it appears flexible enough to do almost anything. But JMeter’s ease is often a myth. In reality, it is rarely the most sensible or low-cost choice.

Testing is Vital

Seriously Though, Five Reasons Testing is Vital

In the last main Testing Times edition (April fools day), I argued, quite ludicrously, that testing is a waste of time. That it slows releases, costs money, and ruins everyone’s fun. Judging by the comments, a few readers took it a bit too literally. So let’s be serious for a minute.

DevOps Aviator brings generative AI into software delivery to help test teams move sooner, reduce manual effort, and get answers faster. It is part of the broader Aviator suite: a set of AI capabilities embedded across OpenText products.

Testing is a waste of time

5 Reasons Testing is a Waste of Time

Let’s be honest, testing is what teams do when they don’t trust their developers. It’s a tax on speed, a relic from waterfall days, and a crutch for people afraid to ship. It just slows down releases, kills creativity, and wastes budget that could be better spent on another sprint.

OpenText Summit: Why This Free Event Is Worth Your Time

You walk into a room where people are talking about the exact problems you wrestle with: tricky deployments, clunky processes, and how to test faster. Sometimes, the right conversation with the right person is enough to unlock a solution or a possibility you hadn’t even considered.

Python

Functional Testing 26.1: Adds Python, Cloud Testing, and more AI

With 26.1, OpenText is giving you something concrete: Python‑based automation, AI‑assisted verification, and cloud labs that fit into your existing CI/CD. This turns functional testing from a separate QA activity into a shared capability that developers, SDETs, and testers can all contribute to.

LoadRunner AI

LoadRunner 26.1: A New Direction in Performance Testing?

OpenText’s version 26.1 is a clear statement of where the Performance Engineering (LoadRunner) family is heading: AI-assisted, simplifying complex tasks and enabling your team to be more productive. This creates a very practical question: how do you buy and deploy these new capabilities in a way that actually moves the needle on risk, cost, and delivery speed?
