The Top Testing Articles of 2022

We all thought 2021 was a crazy year, but then 2022 hit. The pandemic lingered on, war kicked off, energy prices surged, and interest rates started to climb. Suffice to say, things aren’t ideal at the moment.

Throughout all this chaos, software testers have striven to increase quality, accelerate projects and reduce costs. It’s a good job we all like a challenge.

Thankfully, 2022 was a great year for other reasons.

Increasingly, technology is making our lives easier and allowing us all to do more with less.

2022 was also a big year for us here at Calleo. We successfully launched our Testing Times Newsletter which has exceeded all our expectations! If you have not yet seen it or subscribed, you can do so here: Testing Times

In this 2022 roundup, we’ll look back at our top 4 articles that resonated most with you, our readers. Just in case you missed them.

1. LoadRunner Cloud, Professional or Enterprise? Which one is right for you?

Most of you will be aware of, the LoadRunner suite of performance testing products. But do you really know the toolset, and how each product differs?

Well, we’re confident that more of you know now than did a year ago!

LoadRunner Cloud, Professional or Enterprise? Which one is right for you?is our most-read article of 2022 explains the difference between the tools.

We recommend you read the article for a detailed breakdown, but here’s a very high-level look at the differences:

  1. If you’re need run web and mobile tests, without setting up dedicated infrastructure, then LoadRunner Cloud is your best option.
  2. If you need the widest possible protocol support and complex load scenarios, then you need LoadRunner Professional.
  3. If you run enterprise-grade, globally distributed performance engineering projects, then LoadRunner Enterprise is the choice for you.

2. Jira – Great For Developers, Not Ideal For Testers

Jira is a great tool, but it’s not an enterprise-ready test management solution. Unfortunately, a lot of businesses are using it for exactly that purpose and running into issues.

In Jira – Great For Developers, Not Ideal For Testerswe look at why using Jira for test management is problematic, and what you should look for in a proper test management tool, without it costing a fortune.

3. The Selenium Myth: It’s Not As Free As You Think

Selenium is free, right? Well sure there’s no license cost, but the cost of ownership is far from free. In fact, when you factor in human effort and associated costs, Selenium is often more expensive than paid automation tools.

In The Selenium Myth: It’s Not As Free As You Think we look at why free isn’t always free, and how Selenium often ends up costing more than others tools. As a sneak peek, these factors include:

  1. Slow scripting times
  2. Laborious maintenance
  3. Limited support for enterprise applications
  4. Selenium isn’t embracing AI

4. Chaos Testing: What it is, and Why You Need it!

As we announced this year, LoadRunner Cloud and LoadRunner Professional both now include the ability to perform chaos testing. This begs the question though, what exactly is chaos testing?

In What is Chaos Engineering? (and Why You Need It)we explain chaos testing, and how you can use it to help build resilience into your production systems.

As a quick summary, chaos testing can help you:

  1. Understand how failures affect your solution
  2. Test your redundant systems (if you have any)
  3. Identify components that need additional resilience

What’s in store for 2023?

In many ways, 2023 will be like 2022. We expect ever-tightening budgets, and an increasing reliance on test tools to save time and cost.

As we predicted, AI Automation really took off in 2022. In 2023 more and more companies will use AI to get ahead of the game and accelerate testing.

You can rest assured that whatever happens in 2023, Calleo will keep you informed.

LoadRunner AI

LoadRunner 26.1: A New Direction in Performance Testing?

OpenText’s version 26.1 is a clear statement of where the Performance Engineering (LoadRunner) family is heading: AI-assisted, simplifying complex tasks and enabling your team to be more productive. This creates a very practical question: how do you buy and deploy these new capabilities in a way that actually moves the needle on risk, cost, and delivery speed?

Hooked on Open Source

Revealed: How Consultancies Get You Hooked on Bad Tools

Picture the scene: you’re about to engage a consultancy for testing services, and their proposal leans heavily on open‑source tools, but there’s a nagging doubt… a misalignment between what you’re paying for and what they’re delivering.

You want the guidance and support to prevent costly mistakes; they want more billable days.

cut test maintenance

4 Ways to Cut Test Maintenance Effort with AI

Automation maintenance is a pain. It’s a frustrating time drain that nobody enjoys. Unfortunately, teams are doing more of it than ever, with modern solutions changing like the wind and each new release jeopardising script integrity. Thankfully, AI-driven automation is here to help.

2025 Roundup: Check Out The Top 5 Testing Times Articles

Thanks to your support, 2025 was another excellent year for Testing Times and our 10,000+ subscribers. We explored a wide range of software testing topics, including test automation, performance testing, Jira fatigue, tester authority, and more. Below is a quick look at the five newsletters with the most reactions this year, and why they resonated so strongly.

Is WFH worth the risk

Remote Testing: Is Working From Home Worth The Risk?

Increasingly, organisations expect remote and hybrid testers to use borrowed tool licences, unstable VPNs, and software never designed to leave the office. That creates significant compliance and security risks that can turn into serious long‑term problems. It’s not the testers per se, but remote execution over on‑prem licences is a software audit waiting to happen. Read on to learn why a compliance nightmare isn’t the only reason your test setup might not be fit for distributed and home‑working team members.

Effortless automation

Solved: 4 Common Test Automation Headaches

Software teams know the story all too well: automation promises speed and reliability, but reality often brings fragile scripts, phantom failures, and endless rework. In the end, the technology intended to accelerate releases ends up bogging things down. Or at least, that’s how things used to be… Today’s AI-powered functional

Test the Untestable

Test the Untestable: Unlock Savings & Accelerate Your Project

Testers have long been asked to test earlier, faster, and more often. In truth, however, when critical APIs, integrations, or microservices aren’t ready, testing gets stuck. We’ve all been there, raring to go, like greyhounds in the slips…  but with nothing to test, and increasingly concerned about the impending last-minute panic.

The Test Tools You Need

Testers: Will We Finally Get The Tools We Need?

During the 2008 credit crunch, companies slashed technical investment. The mantra “do more with less” stuck—and 17 years later, testers are still paying the price as demands, complexity, and expectations have soared. It’s no coincidence that we’re witnessing an increasing number of high-profile software failures and cyber attacks. Yet, there’s still little willingness to invest in the right test tools and training.
